European ban on cigarette filters more likely to succeed than national measure
A potential ban on filter cigarettes is under consideration as part of the revision of the European Single-Use Plastics Directive, an EU measure aimed at tackling plastic litter. A joint letter to Parliament from the Ministries of Health, Climate and Green Growth, and Infrastructure and Water Management indicates that the Netherlands supports a European ban on the sale of cigarettes with filters.
At the request of the House of Representatives, the ministry commissioned legal experts from Leiden University to investigate which policy options could be applied to reduce this pollution and whether a national ban is legally feasible.
